The birds

The birds. The birds! The birds are coming to get you...

Current estimates by the Australian government suggest that a flu pandemic -- such as that generated by the avian flu virus -- with an attack rate affecting 25% of the Australian population could, over a 6-8 week period, lead to 13,000-44,000 deaths. That’s if there was no pandemic vaccine and no treatment available.

The Australian Government currently has a stockpile of close to four million doses of the antiviral flu Tamiflu but this would be triaged with ‘essential service’ personnel innoculated ahead of other members of the population.

As Mike Davis has pointed out , the British media has revealed that officials were scouring the country for suitable sites for mass mortuaries, based on official fears that avian flu could kill as many as 700,000 Britons.

Already the bird flu virus has spread to 22 provinces out of 33 in the sprawling Indonesian archipelago, killing more than 9.5 million poultry since 2003. Bird flu has killed 64 people in four Asian nations since late 2003.

... and we’re implored to worry about the threat of international terrorism!
