Gaia goes gah gah

ITEM:It was in the late 1960s that James Lovelock first suggested the Earth acted as a single organism. He named his observation, Gaia. He was ridiculed and the idea was ignored for decades. It wasn't until the end of the 90s that a new branch of science grew out of his theory; that of Earth System Science. Now, as the effects of climate change have become obvious for all to see, James Lovelock has taken his theory further in a book, The Revenge of Gaia. Lovelock claims we've passed the point of no return with climate change. This week, The Science Show traces the growth of Lovelock's theory and gathers views from climate scientists about his apocalyptic vision. [AUDIO]
I've not been a keen supporter of this Gaia notion as it had too many associations for me -- per the label --with some sort of spirituality . That's something I abhor when it comes to addressing  nature (not for me this "Mother Nature" mode). But I admit I've been terribly biased.

This episode of The Science Show is  a must listen and impacted big time on me. Rather than being a touchy feely session in spirituality for tree huggers, Lovelock's brilliant synthesis of so many attributes of the whole planetary system impresses as an absolute and overwhelmingly reality that cannot now be denied. Thats' my POV, anyway.

So climate warming is , according to Gaia
And Gaia is: a complex entity involving the Earth's biosphere, atmosphere, oceans, and soil; the totality constituting a feedback or cybernetic system which seeks an optimal physical and chemical environment for life on this planet.
a sentence because in terms of feedback the whole show is out of whack. If you don;t know Lovelock is one of those greenies who are advocating nuclear power -- so in one sense  I have to say hang on there , Jimmy, you are too extreme for my preferences.

In the program you can see where he's coming from as his outlook is depressive indeed as he cannot see beyond the society we are currently stuck with. But in this exploration of Gaia there's enough of the talking science and expert types to feed you the coarse reality of what is now happening to our home environment.

So listen up there humans and catch the news: Gaia is no longer gay.
